Sunday morning we got up and started the day by heading into the Old City. We entered the city through the Damascus Gate. I believe that it's one of the oldest gates into the city.Than we followed our tour guide Jimmy as he weaved through the city. We would stop periodically for Jimmy to point something out or tell us about the significance of something. Jimmy has lived in Israel his whole life and knows a ton about the city. It was interesting to learn as much as we did. I didn't realize how narrow the streets in Jerusalem were. There were roads that forked off in both directions and either went up or down. The way that Jerusalem was built is that every time a building was destroyed the new building was simply built over the rumble of the old building. So there are many different levels of the city. All the buildings in the city are covered with the same type of stone. I think it's kind of nice, because it seems to connect all parts of the city. In the morning there were only a few shops open, but the more we walked around the more opened up. We stopped for lunch at a little cafe down one of the roads. My favorite part of lunch was the fresh squeezed pomegranate and orange juice. It was delicious. I also picked up some roasted nuts from a sidewalk stand. It was really fun to walk around the city and just see all there was to see, which includes many locals in their everyday lives.
