Day 4 of our family vacation we spent the morning walking around the redwood grove at Jedediah Redwoods State Park. Redwoods are beautiful trees. They are so tall and big around it's amazing. The nice thing about the grove at Jedediah Redwoods State Park was that the road into it was closed (not sure why) so we had to walk about 1/2 mile at most to get to it. It meant that it was really quick and peaceful there. We didn't run into other people until we were on our way back out. After the Redwood grove we were back on the road to head further south along the coast. We stopped along the way to go to a place called Fern Canyon. It's a place my parents heard about from watching California Gold.
Didn't see that episode, but Fern Canyon was really cool. It's right off of the beach and all the canyon walls are covered in ferns. It's really green and kind of cool to see. Supposedly a portion of Jurassic Park was also filmed in the canyon. When we were walking back to our car from the canyon (not a very far walk) we got to see this elk just sitting and eating the grass. We waited for a few minutes but he never turned our direction so this is the best picture I could get. He was pretty big. From there we continued down the coast. That night we stayed at Humboldt Redwoods State Park. This time we were in as big of a redwood grove, but it was nice to see the stars again. It was our last night of camping so we made sure to enjoy all the treats around the camp fire we could get. Smores (with peanut butter), roasted starburst, and apple pies. Got to love campfire treat!

Haha - I'd just like to point out that the video does show a truck going on a dirt road and fording a stream... I guess it does show what you have to go through to get there :)
It amazes me that plants can grow on a vertical surface in the shade.
